Russia Accused Of ‘Space Stalking’ Western Satellites In Escalating Orbital Threat

Germany and the UK have accused Russia of shadowing, jamming, and spying on Western satellites, warning that Moscow’s escalating behaviour in orbit now poses a “fundamental threat” to global security.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said Russian reconnaissance satellites had been observed tracking two IntelSat satellites used by the German military and allies. “Russia’s actions, especially in space, pose a fundamental threat to us all,” he warned, pledging a multi-billion-euro investment to boost Germany’s space defences.

The UK’s Major General Paul Tedman, head of Space Command, echoed those concerns, saying Russian satellites were stalking British assets weekly, using on-board payloads to intercept data. Moscow’s ground-based systems have also been accused of jamming communications and navigation signals, disrupting telecoms, satellite imagery, and even civil aviation.

The allegations follow reports that China has been assisting Russia by conducting satellite reconnaissance over Ukraine — part of a broader technological alliance since Moscow’s 2022 invasion. NATO officials, meanwhile, have warned that Russia is exploring the use of space-based nuclear weapons to disable enemy satellites — a charge the Kremlin denies, despite vetoing a UN ban on such weapons.

Experts say Russia’s orbital tactics range from electronic interference to close-proximity “shadowing” of rival satellites, possibly for intelligence gathering or sabotage. Some Russian craft have even tested projectile launches in low orbit, prompting fears they could act as “space sleeper cells,” capable of striking without warning.

“Sometimes you’re guessing about the capabilities of a satellite — and the intentions of the operator,” said Clayton Swope of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

The U.S. and France first raised alarms over such Russian manoeuvres a decade ago. But as the militarisation of space accelerates, officials now warn the Cold War’s new frontier may be above our heads.

Key Takeaways

  • Germany and UK accuse Russia of “stalking” and jamming Western satellites.

  • Moscow suspected of using “space sleeper” satellites and signal interception.

  • NATO fears Russia developing orbital nuclear weapons despite denials.

Yeah: "Russia bad!"  The reality of this world is that the West projects its own plans to control its power onto other nations who they have labeled as "enemies," the short list being: Russia, China, DPRK, and Iran.  Trust me, if the US is accusing Russia of "Space Stalking," the US itself is in the process of "Space Stalking."  Anyway, the historical animus and hatred of Russia, ethnic Russians, and Russian culture in Germany and the UK is generational and it spans centuries of history.

But?

Who studies history?

Back to Star Wars, greasing the rich. "Fundamental threat" to 'global security, my tuches.
