Gaza Ceasefire Hit by Hamas Tunnel Dilemma

US President Donald Trump's envoy, Jared Kushner, has arrived in Israel amid mounting challenges to advance the Gaza ceasefire negotiations. Key issues like Hamas disarmament, Gaza’s reconstruction, and future governance remain unresolved. Moreover, the presence of Hamas fighters trapped in Rafah tunnels adds a fresh hurdle to ongoing dialogues.

The current ceasefire followed a serious conflict that erupted after Hamas’s attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, resulting in significant casualties. US envoy Steve Witkoff suggested an amnesty model for the trapped fighters, although no agreement has been reached. Kushner's discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu reportedly included the ceasefire's initial phase focus on hostages and future plans for disarming Hamas.

Negotiations are further complicated by conflicting demands and recent truce violations. Hamas demands safe passage for its fighters, which Israel opposes. Meanwhile, Israel continues its firm stance against any Hamas involvement in future Gaza governance. The ongoing challenge is compounded by differing perspectives on key issues from both sides, potentially hampering progress.

Despite the alleged truce violations, efforts are ongoing to reclaim hostages and deliver humanitarian support to Gaza. As of now, several hostages have been released, balancing prisoner exchanges between the involved parties. However, accusations persist concerning delays and casualty counts, reported the BBC.

The conflict currently sees Israel occupying over half of Gaza, with potential further withdrawals anticipated. This occupation intertwines with fears from Arab countries about a permanent partition of Gaza, should the separation continue without constructive talks. The absence of a clear route to a Palestinian state further clouds future developments, underlining the complexity of the peace processes.

Key Takeaways

  • Negotiations face new hurdles with Hamas fighters in tunnels.
  • Discussions include disarmament and governance of Gaza.
  • Fears of permanent Gaza partition amid ongoing occupation.

No need for cannibalism. They'll be eating the aid food they have stolen and stockpiled.

Rafah sits on the border with Egypt and it has one of the largest tunnel networks that was used for smuggling. They cannot flood these tunnels as they did elsewhere.   The only way to close them down is through demolition.

Reported by the BBC.

The IDF is still bombing. The photo doesn't look at all like Witkoff or Kushner.

They built the tunnels as Israel built a bloody big wall around them and wouldn't let them out or things in. Jeez, try to read a bit before commenting.

Erm, Hamas are simply freedom fighters. Israel abuse, Apartheid, occupation, blockade, harassment, violence, humiliation, land theft, etc brought this disaster to the people of Gaza.

You are easily fooled by Israeli propaganda.
