A senior official from the Huawa Subdistrict Administrative Organisation (SAO) in Prachinburi province has been arrested for allegedly accepting a 2-million-baht bribe in exchange for a construction permit. Officers from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) and the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) conducted the joint operation on 11 November, detaining the suspects while they were receiving the cash at a petrol station café in Sri Maha Phot District.

Police identified the main suspect as the head of the Planning and Construction Division at Huawa SAO and his associate, 63-year-old Mr. Saiyan, who was allegedly acting as an intermediary. Both men were apprehended under warrants issued by the Region 2 Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases, accused of demanding bribes and abusing their official positions. Officers seized 2 million baht in cash, believed to be part of the payment requested from a construction contractor seeking a building permit.

The arrests followed a complaint filed by a local construction contractor who alleged that the suspect, demanded 500,000 baht in exchange for approving a warehouse construction permit covering 4,000 square metres. The official allegedly claimed that part of the payment would go to the Huawa SAO chief as a “signing fee.” Mr. Saiyan reportedly acted as the go-between, collecting the money from the complainant.

Investigators said the suspects also pressured the complainant to hire them for landfilling and construction work worth 6.5 million baht, promising to “facilitate” the permit process. When the contractor refused, they filed a formal complaint with anti-corruption authorities, leading to a sting operation and subsequent arrests. Both suspects have denied all allegations.

Police and PACC officers are searching the suspects’ residences and offices for further evidence. The case underscores ongoing efforts by Thai authorities to crack down on corruption within local administrative bodies, particularly concerning public construction and licensing.

And how about the business that paid the money???? They should be prosecuted too

And they get a slap on the wrist or let off  Thai justices  !!!!!

If the victim of corruption were to be charged after blowing the whistle, that would be the end of the concept of whistleblowing. I understand that if someone is disgusted by having to pay a government officer, the payment itself acts as evidence of the corrupt act. You can't take anyone to court without evidence.

I wonder if they are unusually rich
