Thailand's Immigration Bureau has initiated a national crackdown on foreigners exploiting visa-free exemptions. Announced on November 12 by Phuket Immigration, the move targets individuals using repeated entries to engage in illegal activities such as cybercrime and human trafficking. The directive is enforced under the policy guidance of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and National Police Chief Police General Kittirat Panpetch.

The campaign, led by Police Lieutenant General Panumas Boonyalak, aims to curb foreigners masquerading as tourists to conduct criminal operations. Police Major General Cherngron Rimphidi outlined that the initiative has already denied entry to approximately 2,900 foreigners since the start of 2025. Authorities have identified several misuse cases, prompting the launch of enhanced immigration measures.

The new operation outlines four key enforcement measures:

  1. Stricter visa-free screening: Immigration officers will scrutinize visitors repeatedly using visa exemptions without returning home. Entry will be refused if there’s no valid reason for repeated visits.
  2. Border hotspot surveillance: Foreigners deported or blacklisted, notably from border areas such as Mae Sot in Tak province, will face entry denial, particularly when linked to Myanmar-based scam networks.
  3. Tighter visa extension checks: Provincial offices will reassess and potentially revoke visas for those with suspicious visa runs, risking prosecution and deportation.
  4. Overstay crackdowns: Nationwide operations will target foreigners overstaying visas, with results publicized.

While the increased screening may slightly impact wait times at immigration, Cherngron assured the public that each check will take about 45 seconds. Travelers during peak hours might wait over 40 minutes, although Thai citizens can utilize automated lanes, reducing the wait to about 20 seconds.

The initiative aims not to deter tourists but to attract "high-quality visitors" who positively impact the Thai economy. By ensuring a secure environment, these measures are expected to bolster confidence in Thailand as a safe destination, as reported by The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand cracks down on visa-free entries to tackle illegal activities.
  • Stricter immigration checks and border surveillance are implemented.
  • Efforts focus on enhancing safety without discouraging tourism.

Visa exempt entry for 60 days for anyone - What could possibly go wrong? Continue ban on alcohol sales and start fining tourists having a drink 10K Baht - What could possibly go wrong? Allow

  • Looks like good bye overnight visa runs - oh! what a bummer for some people.

Why don't the immigration police receive filtered data of people who have overstayed? Your entry and visa data is registered on arrival so it should not be hard to provide a list, or lists by district, of people who have not left the country in accordance with their entry permission?

I'm surprised they've kept the visa exempt at 60 days.

I'm surprised it took them so long to figure out it is being abused.  A whole family in my neighborhood went on a visa run last month.  I don't want to say more, but the whole thing is a bit dodgy.

Visa exempt entry for 60 days for anyone - What could possibly go wrong?

Continue ban on alcohol sales and start fining tourists having a drink 10K Baht - What could possibly go wrong?

Allow high rise buildings to be built by cheap Chinese project builders under the supervision of the Audit Office who know SFA about building constructions (with all the bribes and kick-backs involved) - What could possibly go wrong??

Allow anyone to be the Captain of a boat taking tourists on trips - What could possibly go wrong?

And on an on the list goes - more and more everyday everyweek everymonth.

Thailand - the Hub of not asking tough questions like - What could go possibly wrong with this harebrained idea?

I was told that if you never accept your mistakes and learn from them, you will continue to make the same mistakes again and again.  I guess Thais have a problem with 'losing face' if they ever accept that they made a mistake, so therefore they will continue to make the same harebrained mistakes again and again forever.

Finally, something they have never done before!     /sarc

If the hub of digital system Thailand should not get any foreigners in overstay... One simply computer program could show who did not leave/ or extended the visa.. And as everyone has to fill in his address everywhere they should be easily located... And when you enter too many times it is the problem of the immigration, as they should be able to see when the last entry was and how days are between the new entry.. But Immigration systems don't work well

Exactly. They do this every other week. LOL

They shouldn't have extended the visa exempt scheme to 93 nationalities and at the same time to 60 days for all of them. Madness.

Their timing for this "crackdown" is pretty silly though: high season is about to start, snowbirds are about to arrive, tourist numbers have been disappointing...

There is no ban on alcohol sales.

Not anyone can captain a boat, they have to be licenced.

excellent news. keep the 60 days exempt entry, but stop the abuse, visa exempt is for tourists, not people staying long term. there are plenty of visa options for people who want to stay long term.

The Thai Govt makes it easy to cheat, how many people with those thousands of DTV Visa’s issued “really” are practicising Muay Thai, going to “Accredited Cooking School”  or Getting continuous Medical Treatments.  I called the LA Consulate and asked how many Medical Appointments do I have to make to qualify for a DTV, she said “Oh, a couple during the 6 months”  I said I wanted to learn “Traditoonal Tai Masaage at the School in Wat Po”  She said, “If you can show us official enrollment, you qualify since that is a Thai Art”  Think I’ll enroll in Thai Massage and get a 10 year DTV  😆😆😆😆

Common knowledge but that doesn't stop the keyboard warriors from a good Thai bashing. Often wonder what the grumpy crowd sees in Thailand?

Presumably those on extensions are working abroad it is not affected by this and the same as those getting a re-entry permit and that is totally different?

Or stop altogether??:whistling:

Imagine you go to, say Cambodia, for a 'visa run' and Thai immigration won't let you back into Thailand? You are stuck?

If that’s the case they will have to compensate all those who paid for that particular visa I’m on an O visa have been for many years why they can’t offer a five year multi entry visa at a reasonable cost is beyond me

I did post just now and this is my understanding too and in any case I do not go out of Thailand even once but then one would get a reentry permit Correct?

Agreed.

Thailand has never wanted people living in the country on tourist visas. Just because the visa has a 5 year expiration date doesn't mean they  intend you to literally stay for 5 uninterrupted years.

I'm slowing getting annoyed with the DTV people because over and over again they have this entitled attitude about their "right" to live in Thailand for FIVE YEARS because they took a cooking class or sell some trinkets online.

Dude Thai visa abuse has been going on since I hit these shores in the 80s.

The burgeoning Thai message Boards way back when had the EXACT same stories about Visas you see here.

Its like air pollution, same same but different...this time.
