Amid an outbreak of African Swine Fever, the Quezon City Government has ordered the temporary closure of lechon establishments in the La Loma district, known as the Lechon Capital of the Philippines. The directive, issued on November 13, mandates the culling of swine to prevent the disease's spread as the festive season approaches, impacting both consumers and businesses reliant on the popular roasted dish. This move follows recommendations from the Bureau of Animal Industry, City Veterinary Department, and City Health Department.

The closure affects fourteen lechon businesses that were ordered to halt operations on November 12. These measures are intended to isolate the outbreak to La Loma and ensure the health safety of other markets in Quezon City. To enforce containment, checkpoints have been set up to regulate swine movement within the district, minimizing the risk of spread.

Despite the temporary suspension, the local government is committed to assisting affected businesses. Support will be provided to help establishments comply with health protocols, ensuring they can resume operations safely and continue serving the public. Public cooperation is being urged to maintain safety and cleanliness during this period of heightened vigilance.

The African Swine Fever affects only pigs and poses no direct health risk to humans. However, its presence significantly threatens the pork industry, which could lead to economic repercussions in the region. Authorities emphasize that there is no need for alarm as long as preventive measures are in place and followed diligently.

Looking ahead, authorities are focused on managing the situation to allow a swift return to normalcy. Further evaluations will determine when businesses can safely reopen and under what conditions. The government assures ongoing monitoring and updates to keep the public informed, reported PhilStar.

Key Takeaways

  • Quezon City temporarily closes 14 lechon outlets in La Loma due to African Swine Fever.
  • Measures include swine culling and checkpoints to prevent disease spread.
  • Local authorities emphasize that the fever poses no risk to human health.
