Raquel Duncombe, an anesthetic nurse at Princess Royal University Hospital in London, has been recognized as a "Joint Protector of Play" at the recent Healthcare Awards. Duncombe received the accolade for her innovative use of toys to alleviate young patients' anxiety during emergency surgeries. Her approach is aimed at calming children to ease the surgical process for both patients and healthcare workers.

Duncombe utilizes the "Starlight Distraction Box," which includes toys and games, to soothe children undergoing procedures like appendectomies, bone fractures, and lumbar punctures. The National Health Service (NHS) King's College Hospital labeled her method as a "playful approach." Duncombe expressed disbelief and gratitude, stating, "It is surreal – it’s my first ever award. I’ve just been doing what I can to help our department and make things better for the children."

In her interview with the BBC, Duncombe noted the importance of reducing children's fear, which not only benefits the patients but also makes the environment more manageable for healthcare workers. "It’s scary for children to come to us: everyone is rushing around and focused on their role. If a child is upset and crying, there’s more risk – it can make the airway harder to manage," she shared.

The "Protector of Play Award" aims to acknowledge the dedication and sacrifices of healthcare workers. Duncombe, originally from the Philippines, considers this recognition a source of pride not just for her but also for her homeland. "For a Filipino who is working for a long time here in the UK, it’s pride for us, as well, to have served this country, too, through the little ways," she said with joy.

Looking ahead, Duncombe’s recognition can inspire other healthcare professionals to adopt similar practices, enhancing patient care standards. The award highlights the positive impact of a compassionate approach, potentially setting a precedent in other medical institutions, reported Balita.
