Thaksin's Stress Behind Bars Raises Health Concerns

Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is experiencing significant stress while incarcerated, raising concerns about his mental health, according to his daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra. She visited Thaksin at Klongprem Central prison in Bangkok and reported that while his physical health is stable, he appears very stressed mentally. Thaksin's situation is exacerbated by two new legal challenges he faced this month, potentially impacting his parole prospects.

Thaksin's stress comes amidst recent unfavorable legal developments. The Supreme Court ordered him to pay 17.6 billion baht in taxes and interest linked to his 2006 Shin Corp share sale. Furthermore, an appeal has been filed against his recent acquittal on lese-majeste charges. These developments compound Thaksin's legal complexities and impact his prospects of ongoing freedom.

The Ministry of Justice's revised regulations on transferring inmates out of prisons are seen by some as an effort to keep Thaksin detained, potentially influencing upcoming elections in March. Paetongtarn, having distanced herself from politics since her dismissal as prime minister on August 29, emphasized her focus on supporting her father. She refrained from speculating on whether political motives underlie his continued imprisonment.

As the Shinawatra family navigates these challenges, the Pheu Thai Party, long associated with them, adjusts under new leadership. The family is tasked with addressing the substantial financial burden imposed by the Supreme Court, following its determination that Thaksin benefited from the Shin Corp share transfer. Despite these pressures, Paetongtarn remains reserved on commenting regarding the attorney-general's appeal of her father's lese-majeste acquittal in an August ruling.

Looking ahead, Thaksin's family continues to work on gathering the required funds to meet the Supreme Court's order. Meanwhile, Thaksin remains imprisoned following his previous one-year sentence for conflict of interest and abuse of authority while in office. His time in a VIP suite at Police General Hospital from August was dismissed as not constituting actual imprisonment, with the court rejecting claims of illness during his hospital stay, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Thaksin Shinawatra's stress in prison raises health concerns.
  • Legal challenges continue, affecting his legal and financial situation.
  • Family and party adapt amid changing political and legal landscapes.

He is not the only one if he has stress..in fact he has money and several activities that others don't have and probably they have more stress than this man.. But of course he doesn't want to complete his sentence of 1 year and with his lies and corruption he can probably find a way out.. He proved it already with his high bloodpressure hospitalization... Why give this man so much attention.. Let him be in jail teach and clean and follow his Buddha teachings, many others don't have these privileges and no money to buy the things they need

Yeah, Tony looks really stressed!  He try any loophole he can think of to get out of jail

In a way, it's all his own fault; in that way I don't feel sorry for him. If me, I would also get mentally stressed if having a huge unpaid tax bill and upcoming court case for lèse-majesté – especially in Thailand – even that I was not in jail...:whistling:

I have heard that he claims that most of the stress comes from trying to fill out the TM30 form .............. and then there's the 90 day requirement and the darn online method doesn't work !

STRESS !

Sorry, I'm afraid this only warrants one Boo hoo.

he qualifies for a stress-relieving Chinese model...

Reality hits home. This newfound stress of his is indicative of someone that has lived a life of privilege, who has never had to deal with the real challenges in life. Welcome to the real world. Get ready! 👍

Why did he come back? He could've followed one of the 4 Noble Truths and let go...and live a comfortable life abroad.

If he gets out due to stress, thousands of others should also be released

Just give him some Valium and let him deal with it. His plans went awry and now he’s going to lay it on thicker than before. Enough.

He should stop moaning and be thankful he's not doing his original sentence of 8 years.
