Yes that was always the counter argument. Shut up and put up with it for the sake of GDP. Yet the economy is now in the toilet and we have a housing crisis, schooling crisis and NHS crisis due to all the extra population.

 😄

So sling all the immigrants - legal or not - back to where they came from, then eh?

Don't worry, it's not remotely true.  London remains one of the world's greatest cities to visit.

  • Having bled every last penny from the (working, law abiding) residents of London this parasite needs a new organism from which to leech.    So now, not only do tourists to London need a stab

  • Good to see London taking its ideas from Thailand...  😹

Old papa tax kills me

Certainly all the illegal ones. That goes without saying.

"Legal" ones who commit serious crimes within a certain period of getting their legal status could also be considered for revocation of their status and deportation.

And you're the one complaining about a two-tier UK🤦😂

2 tier Britain does not refer to legal vs illegal status Ray.

I thought you might have known that.

Does that paragraph refer to illegal immigrants? Answer: No.

As I said, you are proposing a 2-tier system.

Not at all.

Immigrants should have a condition that they have to remain free of serious crime for the first ten years in the country or face deportation. A bit like how new drivers are "on probation" for 2 years after passing their test or they revert to learner status.

Totally fair. Unlike Keir's 2 tier justice system where white Tory Lucy Connolly gets 30 months jail while minority Labour councillor Ricky Jones gets nothing for arguably a worse offense. That's a 2 tier system, rules for new immigrants is not.

This nonsense again.

White Lucy Connolly plead guilty. So the judge should then say "thanks, I think we'll let you off for the climes you have plead guilty to"?

Ricky Jones plead not guilty and took his chances at a trial and the judgement of a jury of his peers.

Nothing two tier about it.

It is by definition, 2-tier. You are treating immigrants differently to native-born residents.

Lucy Connolly was not given 30 months jail time for being white. Ricky Jones was not given no jail time because he was black.

It appears your prejudice has become so deep-rooted that you are no longer able to understand simple facts.

She plead guilty because she was denied bail and told that it would get her back to her family. Then she got the absolutely ridiculously long jail sentence within weeks for being white and Tory.

Ricky Jones the minority Labour Councilor was of course granted bail and then found not guilty about a year later despite screaming for throats to be slit in front of a large crowd.

Not even close to comparable treatment. Once again, 2 tier.

Lucy Connolly was not jailed for being white and/or Tory. It is not illegal in the UK to be white and/or Tory.

Your sense of (misplaced) grievance seemingly knows no bounds.

She was made an example of because she was white and Tory.

It was an attempt to make everyone self censor. To Shut up and stop talking about these issues. Judging by the posts I am seeing on Social Media it has failed spectacularly, not to mention Lucy is now a regular pundit on many political podcasts and likely to go into politics herself, she will probably end up an MP.

Another own goal for 2 tier Keir.

Talking of 2 tears, it's budget time with Rachel from accounts soon. Should be fun.

Ah yes, the hatred is so strong that you believe a brown Muslim can only win because of.........brown people and Muslims. It is inconceivable that he's the most consistently elected London mayor of all time because he's doing a good job and people of all demographics vote for him. Thankfully most Londoners are more open minded than you.

I have lots of family and lots of friends who live in London. None of them are Muslim. They all voted for Khan because they like what he is doing - they couldn't give a fig what colour he is or what religion he does or does not practise.

Get over yourself and your prejudice.

What absolute tosh.

6.8m voted Tory at the last election. Probably+/-6m were white. Probably at least 50% would vote Tory currently. So you are saying that +/-3m people in the UK should be worried about going to jail simply because of the voting preferences and the fact that are white?😂😂😂

So what now? Are you expecting Starmer to double down? A UK version of McCathyism with 'blues in the cupboard' rather than 'reds under the bed'?

Whatever the budget may bring, I'm sure you'll be here on AN to complain about it.

London Prepares to Introduce Tourist Tax in Major Move.

How sick and greedy is that all those countries that charge Tourist Tax .

the tourists come to the country to spent their Holiday and their money and get charged on top of that.

OK it's only a couple dollars but it is a complete Rip Off like many  other stupid Taxes.

9 hours ago, Nick Carter icp said:

They pay for all of those either directly or indirectly through their hotel bills .

Transport is paid for directly and the rest is paid for  in their accommodations various taxes , so, they will be paying taxes twice , once through their accommodation and then directly

Absolutely correct. Hotels, restaurants, theatres, shops, tourist attractions and other businesses in Westminster City and City of London (as well as all other boroughs) pay business rates. This is a tax paid by businesses directly to the local authority. Also, all hotels, restaurants, pubs, bars and shops will be charging 20% VAT tax (included in bills). Add to this, the costs of employing people (15% employer's national insurance tax). Further, those employed people are then also paying income tax (20-40% typically) and national insurance at 8% on their incomes. The taxi drivers that bring them from the airport are also paying upwards of 50% in fuel taxes before paying personal tax and road tax. Then, as if to rub it in, when the tourist goes home, they are hit with Air Passenger Duty Tax of £13 to £224 per ticket depending on destination and class of travel (i.e. premium economy/business/first class air passenger tax from UK to USA or Asia is £216). Aren't tourists are already contributing enough tax?

It’s entirely reasonable to require them to make a tax contribution.

Are they not contributing by spending their hard-earned money in the City of London?

No, the money they spend goes to businesses, the VAT on the goods and services they buy goes to the Exchequer, not to the City of London.

Spending money at a business generates more profit for the company, which in turn yields more tax revenue.

You love taxation.

The Tourist Tax will be paid to the City of London and/or any other city that takes up the proposed new powers to impose a Tourist tax.

More people paying for the services and infrastructure they use, an excellent idea.

If I use the subway, I pay a fare. Right?

If I stay at a hotel, I'm helping pay the taxes that fund the infrastructure the hotels use. Right?

What am I not paying for with my spending?
