Palestinian-US Teen Freed After Nine Months in Israeli Jail

A Palestinian-US teenager, Mohammed Ibrahim, has been released after nine months in an Israeli jail without charge. At 15, Mohammed Ibrahim was arrested in the Israeli-occupied West Bank for allegedly throwing stones at Jewish settlers, a claim he denies, and he faced detention issues that were highlighted by his family and human rights groups. The US State Department welcomed his release, noting the priority of US citizens' safety.

Mohammed's family described the ordeal as a "horrific and endless nightmare," emphasising the urgent need for medical treatment following his release. The teenager was taken to hospital as soon as he was freed, suffering from conditions developed during his detention. The family remains focused on his health and reclaiming his childhood, frustrated with his treatment and the initial arrest.

Mohammed's case drew significant attention, with 27 US lawmakers urging action from the State Department and US President. His father, Zahar Ibrahim, expressed dissatisfaction with efforts to secure his son's release, underscoring that Mohammed's confession was allegedly coerced through beatings. The broader context of approximately 350 Palestinian children held in Israeli jails, often without charges, underscores this situation and raises human rights concerns.

In the future, Mohammed's family plans to seek justice for their relative, Sayfollah Musallet, whom Israeli settlers reportedly beat to death. Sayfollah, a dual US citizen, had worked alongside Mohammed in their family's ice cream shop in Florida. Despite the ongoing challenges, the family seeks accountability for his death, reported the BBC.

Key Takeaways

  • Mohammed Ibrahim, a Palestinian-US teen, has been freed after nine months in Israeli detention.
  • His family is focused on addressing his health needs and fighting for justice for a deceased relative.
  • The US has criticised Israel's treatment of detained Palestinian children.

The slow drip feed of information we get to see, is extremely damning to Israel.

19 months with no trial for throwing stones! Does anybody believe Israel's intentions are not racist?

What is wrong about holding a suspect in custody whilst there's an investigation ?

Being held on remand happens in many countries

it’s all to do with reasonableness.

They claimed he threw stones, I would think 48 hours is reasonable to investigate that.

Nine months certainly is not reasonable.

16 months is the average time on remand in the UKs jails .

9 months is reasonable and much better then the UKs remand times
