Bacon Blasts White House For Lacking ‘Moral Clarity’ On Ukraine

Rep. Don Bacon detonated a political flare under the White House on Sunday, accusing President Trump’s team of muddled messaging, geopolitical naivety, and a stunning lack of “moral clarity” as the U.S. pushes Ukraine toward a controversial peace deal with Russia.

Speaking on ABC’s This Week, the Nebraska Republican said the administration seems unwilling to state plainly what he considers obvious: that Vladimir Putin is the aggressor, a dictator, and a man who “has murdered all of his opponents.” Instead, Bacon argued, the White House has tiptoed around the Russian leader while pressuring Kyiv to accept concessions that critics warn could cripple Ukraine for decades.

At the centre of the firestorm is the administration’s original 28-point peace proposal — a draft so tilted toward Moscow, Bacon said, that it amounted to “a surrender document.” The plan would have required Ukraine to cede more territory, limit its military, and accept long-term restrictions on Western alignment. Widespread outcry forced officials back to the drawing board, with Trump insisting the draft was not final.

Bacon acknowledged the negotiations have “shifted a little more back toward the middle,” but he said the administration’s stance still lacks conviction. Mixed signals, he warned, embolden Putin while demoralising a democratic nation fighting for survival.

The congressman also flagged a Wall Street Journal report alleging that billionaires close to Trump see potential financial upside in certain deal outcomes. If true, Bacon said, that “alarms me tremendously,” adding that national security “should not be dictated by rare earth minerals, natural gas pipelines, or private profits.”

Bacon urged the administration to stop chasing what he called “pointless” negotiations that ignore Putin’s true intentions. According to him, Russia has no interest in a settlement that leaves Ukraine sovereign, aligned with the West, or able to join European institutions. Putin wants control — another third of Ukraine if he can seize it — and aims to turn the country into a “vassal state.”

“The president should see it,” Bacon said, warning that time is running out for Washington to regain its footing and speak with moral force on one of the most consequential conflicts of the century.

Key Takeaways

  • Rep. Don Bacon says the White House has shown “mixed signals” and lacks “moral clarity” on the Russia–Ukraine war.

  • He slams the administration’s initial peace proposal as a “surrender document” overly favourable to Moscow.

  • Bacon warns of alarming reports suggesting financial interests may be influencing peace-deal negotiations.
