A Russian missile attack has killed four people and injured 40 in Dnipro, eastern Ukraine, following a strike on Monday morning. Unconfirmed reports suggest a ballistic missile was used, causing significant explosions and damage to an office block, cars, and shops. This tragic event strikes just a day before crucial peace talks involving US special envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow.

Dnipro, located about 100km from the frontline, has suffered frequent attacks since Russia initiated its full-scale invasion in February 2022. As diplomatic efforts continue, a Ukrainian delegation recently met with US officials in Florida, including US President's representative Steve Witkoff. Discussions were termed "constructive" by both sides, although tough issues remain unresolved.

The Florida meeting was part of ongoing "shuttle diplomacy" between the conflicting parties and US officials, but deep differences persist. Key sticking points include Russia's demand for Ukraine to withdraw from parts of the Donbas region, which Ukraine firmly opposes. Russia's stance remains uncompromising, further stating it will use "force of arms" to achieve its aims, while Ukraine seeks security guarantees akin to NATO membership.

Ukraine's President Zelensky is currently in Paris to muster support from French President Emmanuel Macron, with plans to visit Ireland. Concerns have risen about perceived US leniency towards Russia over Ukraine's needs, potentially sidelining European influence in talks. Additionally, a corruption scandal at home has weakened Zelensky politically, with high-profile resignations and dismissals following anti-corruption investigations.

While diplomatic efforts aim to bring peace, the human cost has been staggering. Since the conflict reignited in 2022, tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians have lost their lives, and millions have become refugees. The roots of this war trace back to 2014, following Ukraine's pro-Russian president's ousting and Russia's annexation of Crimea.

Key Takeaways

  • A Russian missile strike in Dnipro killed 4 and injured 40 ahead of peace talks.
  • Key issues include Russian demands for territory and Ukraine's security needs.
  • Diplomatic efforts continue, but political challenges and divisions persist.
