A Russian jet-skier assisting in flood-relief operations in Hat Yai has drawn widespread praise after diving into floodwater to retrieve a submerged Thai national flag during rescue work. The incident was shared online on 3 December, by Thai world-champion jet-ski racer Oraphan Ozzawin, known as “Kru Nong Nam,” who has been helping coordinate volunteer teams in severely affected areas of Songkhla province. The video quickly gained traction as viewers responded to the foreign rescuer’s actions with admiration.

Oraphan posted a clip showing the Russian athlete, identified as Mr Igor, swimming through deep water to recover the flag before continuing with relief duties without hesitation. In her accompanying message, she thanked him for his courage and commitment, noting that he had been supporting rescue efforts tirelessly alongside her. She wrote that Thai people should be proud of him and expressed gratitude on behalf of all those affected by the flooding.

Both Oraphan and Igor had been working with volunteer groups and jet-ski rescue teams to reach flooded communities where normal vehicles cannot operate. Their efforts formed part of a broader response involving local charities and the Jet Ski Association of Thailand, as well as the Friends in Need (of “Pa”) Volunteer Foundation. The clip highlighted not only the recovery of the flag but also the close cooperation between Thai and foreign volunteers in the emergency.

Social-media reactions to the post were overwhelmingly positive. Commenters praised the Russian athlete as “a foreigner with a Thai heart” and thanked him for his generosity and stamina during the demanding mission. Others commended both rescuers for their dedication, saying their presence lifted spirits during a difficult time for people in Hat Yai.

Naewna reported that the flooding in Hat Yai continues to disrupt transport, has damaged homes and forced evacuations, prompting ongoing relief operations. Volunteers and emergency teams are expected to remain active in the area over the coming days as water levels reduce and affected households begin recovery. Authorities have urged residents to monitor updates and seek assistance where needed as support efforts continue.
