Indonesia to Repatriate 2 Dutch Men, Including Death Row Inmate

Indonesia has agreed to repatriate two Dutch nationals imprisoned for drug offences, one of whom is on death row, following a deal signed with the Netherlands. The Dutch government sought their return on "humanitarian grounds" due to health issues, as stated on Tuesday. The repatriation involves Siegfried Mets, 74, sentenced to death for smuggling ecstasy pills, and Ali Tokman, 65, serving a life sentence for smuggling MDMA.

The decision comes after the Indonesian government approved their repatriation in October, handing the responsibility to the Dutch government for the men's fate. Mets and Tokman, held in Jakarta and Surabaya respectively, are set to return to Amsterdam on 8 December. The signing occurred in Jakarta, with Indonesia's Yusril Ihza Mahendra and Dutch Minister David van Weel, who signed virtually.

The Dutch Ambassador to Indonesia, Marc Gerritsen, expressed appreciation for the Indonesian cooperation, highlighting the chance for the men to be closer to their families. The Dutch government requested the repatriation of only these two Dutch nationals, out of the five currently serving sentences in Indonesia.

This agreement reflects Indonesia’s ongoing practice of relocating foreign prisoners on death row when health issues arise. Last month, two British prisoners were sent back to the UK under similar circumstances, continuing a pattern of humanitarian repatriations.

Looking towards their homecoming, the Dutch authorities will decide the future for Mets and Tokman, aligning with Indonesia’s initiative to manage its death row population, predominantly linked to drug offences.

Key Takeaways:

  • Indonesia to repatriate two Dutch nationals, one on death row.
  • Health issues prompted the Dutch request for repatriation.
  • They are due to return to Amsterdam on 8 December.
