An Indian national, Lalith Chellaram Sangwani, 42, was arrested in Cebu City for allegedly selling opium at his mini-mart. The arrest occurred after a police raid conducted by the Drug Enforcement Group of the Police Regional Office-Central Visayas uncovered 24 bottles believed to contain opium. The operation took place on Wednesday, December 3, in a mini-mart located in Barangay Kamputhaw.

Sangwani had been under surveillance following reports that he was distributing opium, a substance used to produce drugs like heroin, codeine, and morphine. A test-buy operation confirmed these suspicions, prompting police to obtain a search warrant from Executive Judge Anacleto G. Debalucos of Cebu City Regional Trial Court Branch 17. During the raid, authorities seized approximately 320 grams of opium, valued at P208,000.

The arrest is part of a broader crackdown on illegal drug sales in the region. Police emphasized the importance of proactive measures in curbing drug distribution and expressed confidence in their monitoring systems. Sangwani faces charges under Republic Act 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, which carries severe penalties for drug-related offenses.

Experts warn that the sale of opium poses significant challenges to public safety and health, given its potential to be synthesized into more potent drugs. Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The local community has been encouraged to assist law enforcement in identifying potential illegal operations.

The prosecution of Sangwani is expected to proceed swiftly, with legal authorities aiming to set a precedent against drug smuggling. The police continue to investigate potential accomplices and are working to prevent further illegal activities in the area, reported Manila Bulletin.
