German Parliament Votes to Introduce Voluntary Military Service

Germany's Bundestag has voted to introduce voluntary military service for 18-year-olds, responding to growing security concerns after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The move marks a significant shift in Germany's defence strategy, aligning with Chancellor Friedrich Merz's vision of creating Europe's strongest conventional army. From January 2026, all 18-year-olds will receive a questionnaire to assess interest in joining the military, with the process mandatory for men and voluntary for women.

The decision has sparked widespread protests among young Germans. Organisers anticipate demonstrations in up to 90 cities, opposing any obligation to participate in military life on the grounds that it offers no future prospects. School officials in Hamburg have urged parents to keep their children in school during the demonstrations, anticipating approximately 1,500 protestors.

The vote passed with a 323 to 272 margin, following a similar move by France to introduce voluntary military training. The German government plans to make this service voluntary, but starting July 2027, all 18-year-old men will undergo medical exams to determine fitness for potential service. Defence Minister Boris Pistorius emphasised the importance of these examinations for ensuring operational readiness in emergencies.

Currently, the Bundeswehr comprises about 182,000 personnel, and the plan is to increase this by 20,000 within the next year. Long-term goals include reaching 260,000 personnel by the early 2030s, along with 200,000 reservists to meet NATO targets. Although voluntary, compulsory service remains an option if security threats escalate or volunteer numbers fall short.

Germany's military downsized significantly post-Cold War, ending compulsory service in 2011. However, recent pressure, particularly from the US under President Donald Trump, has urged increased defence spending among NATO members. Incentives for voluntary service include a monthly salary of approximately 103,000 baht.

The Bundestag also addressed a controversial pensions reform bill ensuring current pension levels until 2031. Despite narrow coalition support, the far-left party's decision to abstain aided its passage, averting a government crisis.

Key Takeaways

  • Germany introduces voluntary military service for 18-year-olds from 2026.
  • Protests erupt nationwide, with significant opposition from youths.
  • Military expansions aim to strengthen Germany’s defence amid rising threats.

And just like that all that requirement for equality vanishes overnight, I wonder if they will also use diversity quotas like they do in the corporate world....?

I suppose currently joining the army is voluntary, and clearly it hasn't gone that well. I agree with the kids who say there is no future career growth as a soldier. Technology opens up the possibility of earning qualifications that are accepted by industries after completing service.

The German military is a sad joke.  I remember a report years ago saying that the total operation-ready strength of the once vaunted Luftwaffe was less than 40 attack jets. Similar, the army had less than 50 tanks available for immediate deployment.

This is a fascinating article from last year on the subject;

Yet these young men will be screaming for help from the NATO forces if Germany ever gets attacked and starts to lose.

Typical.

I want to be safe, but let somebody else protect me in the meantime.

Exactly. It shows you exactly what they really think about equality.

I'm sure their claimed belief that a man becomes a woman simply because he says he is, will also disappear overnight if this military service becomes mandatory and men start becoming "trans women" to escape it.

Likewise, DEI requirements for minority quotas will be [cough] sidelined when the "job" involves risking your life for the country. No white working class male will be denied THIS gig due to his "white privilege".

Leftist ideology is a house of cards built on sand. It's so pathetic.

The current German Government seems intent on war with Russia.  War brings casualties, and the heavier the casualties the greater the prospects of promotion … for the survivors.
