Not sure why nobody has replied to this. As far as I know there is no notary system here comparable to the Western system. Thai people go to government departments to get copies of 'paperwork' for their needs. I tried to get a Thai lawyer to 'certify' a copy of my passport but he refused even though he could have made 500 or 1000 baht for 10 seconds work (and I thought they were all supposed to crooks!).

Sounds like a trip to a US embassy or consulate unless maybe an American professional working in Thailand can do it for you?

I went through this last year. I needed some papers notarized for my Australian drivers licence. I ended up having to travel to the Australian Embassy in Bangkok and pay quite a bit of money (I think it was over 2000 baht) to have them notarized.

If you are in Bangkok the US Embassy is likely your best choice. Some law firms have the service. I know of one in Asoke. Try Google "notary public" bangkok you'll find several places.

There doesn't seem to be a clear distinction being made between a certification and full fledged notarial services. (The latter is relatively hard to locate even in London.) Certification of copies by any reputable professional - eg lawyer, doctor, accountant - giving his name and contact details is accepted in most commercial contexts.

I'm looking for certfication of copies of my passport. If someone has had this done in Chiang Mai, perhaps by the British consulate, I'd be grateful to know what they charged.

I was told that only Embassy notarized documents would do in my case, and that was only for a driver's licence. You're better off just heading to your Embassy and being done with it.

It was Sunbelt Asia who gave me the advice to a similar query I posted late last year.

He is a notary and a lawyer.

Pleasant , helpful chap.

Probably charge you 1000b.

(I asked and he said he was happy for me to pass on his details to anyone else who might have need of such services).

Doing a Google search on ThaiVisa for “notarial services” I found, among others, the following links which you may find useful:
