A 63-year-old man was discovered dead inside his home in Betong district, Yala province, after an apparent fatal attack by a male macaque known for aggressive behaviour in the area. Police and rescue officers found the body on 6 December following a report from the Betong Sawang Betong Thammasathan Rescue Foundation. Early assessments suggested he had been dead for two to three days, with dried blood on the floor and visible injuries indicating a violent struggle.

The incident occurred at a single-storey wooden house in a fruit orchard about 50 metres from Pracha Uthit Road in Ban Kapaekoto Nai, Betong subdistrict. Officers identified the deceased as Chaiphum, 63, who was found sitting against a wall wearing shorts and holding a long metal rod. A wound was observed on his left leg, and bloodstains were present on his body and throughout the house.

Authorities were alerted after Kanop Chawna, chairman of the Betong Sawang Betong Thammasathan Rescue Foundation, informed Pol Lt Col Jakkrin Laksana of Betong Police Station. Rescue members, police investigators, medical staff and volunteers attended the scene, finding the body already bloated and emitting a strong odour. The body was transferred to Betong Hospital for a detailed post-mortem examination.

Relatives told police that the victim had previously been attacked by the same macaque, which had bitten him on the shoulder around 10 days earlier. Four days before the fatal incident, the macaque reportedly attacked another family member living nearby, forcing them to leave their home and temporarily relocate to central Betong. Local residents described the animal as an adult male macaque that had been following a female macaque in the area, showing heightened aggression.

Investigators believe the victim may have tried to defend himself with the metal rod found in his hand. Police are working to determine the precise circumstances of the attack, including whether the man succumbed immediately to his injuries or died later from blood loss. Officers are also assessing if the macaque poses an ongoing threat to others living nearby.

Naewna reported that further consultation with wildlife authorities is expected as officials consider how to manage the macaque, given the repeated incidents involving residents. Community members have expressed concern about safety, particularly for those living near the orchard where the macaque has been seen frequently.
