The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the Philippines are planning to introduce accessible and walkable sidewalks along EDSA. This initiative aims to ease the travel experience for commuters and pedestrians, particularly benefiting persons with disabilities (PWDs) and senior citizens. The announcement follows a joint inspection led by DOTr Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez and DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon, who walked four kilometers from Ayala Ave., Makati, to Roxas Blvd., Pasay on December 9.

The inspection's goal was to ensure the creation of safe sidewalks for all commuters, addressing accessibility especially for vulnerable groups. According to Lopez, President's directions to the DOTr are focused on making travel safe and convenient, not just for motorists but for all, including commuters on foot. The efforts are part of a broader approach to transform EDSA into a commuter-friendly environment in response to public demand.

Secretary Dizon emphasized that regular commuters along EDSA experience significant stress due to its current state. He reiterated the President’s directive to finally address the long-standing issues faced by daily commuters. The renovation aims to alleviate these concerns by providing a more pedestrian-friendly passage, addressing grievances that have persisted for years.

The planned renovations are set to begin in the first quarter of 2026. Both departments are committed to improving the overall experience for EDSA's commuters by making it safer and more accessible, ultimately encouraging more people to travel by foot instead of vehicles, reported Balita.
