Over 1,168 schools have been closed in Thailand-Cambodian border provinces due to ongoing conflict, Education Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat announced on Wednesday. Among them, 102 schools have been repurposed as evacuation shelters. The closures are a response to intensifying hostilities, prioritizing the safety of students and staff.

Fighting broke out on Sunday and has been escalating, raising concerns of broader conflicts along the border. As tensions increase, schools are proactively closing to mitigate risks to children and educators. The Ministry of Education is focused on closely monitoring developments and maintaining readiness for emergency responses.

In addition to the closures, the Vocational Education Commission has been tasked with deploying volunteer students to assist evacuees in Buri Ram. They are working on setting up electrical and cooking systems at evacuation sites. The ministry emphasizes the importance of rapid support to those displaced by the conflict.

Looking forward, plans are in place to deploy ‘Fix It Centre’ teams when the conflict de-escalates. These teams will assist in repairing affected properties and farm machinery, aiming to restore normalcy swiftly for affected communities. This approach underscores the ministry’s commitment to both immediate response and long-term recovery for residents, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways:

  • Over 1,168 schools closed due to Thai-Cambodian border fighting.
  • 102 schools serve as evacuation shelters to aid displaced individuals.
  • Recovery plans include property repairs and community support measures.
