Seven police officers from Caloocan City were dismissed on December 10 after the National Police Commission (Napolcom) found them guilty of misconduct related to the death of Dion Angelo Dela Rosa. Dela Rosa contracted leptospirosis while searching for his illegally detained father. The officers were charged with grave misconduct, dishonesty, and other violations.

Dion, searching for his father, waded through floodwaters leading to his illness and subsequent death. Investigations revealed the father had been detained for a minor gambling offense, despite police initially denying any connection between the arrest and the son's death. Napolcom's ruling seeks to uphold accountability within the police force.

Caloocan Bishop and Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David praised the swift resolution, highlighting its significance for marginalized communities. He emphasized the injustice faced by those unable to afford legal recourse. Napolcom's Vice Chairperson Rafael Vicente Calinisan stated this verdict should serve as a deterrent to misconduct within the police.

Looking forward, the commission stressed that this action is not an attack on the entire police force but a move to ensure integrity and enhance morale among honorable officers. Families affected by police misconduct may find some solace in this outcome, although systemic issues still require addressing. The case underscores the ongoing need for vigilance and reform within law enforcement, reported Manila Bulletin.
