Featured Replies

Years ago , (10 years) I went twice to area called Mae Hong Son

It had a big lake with small paddle boats you could hire

.is this a good area to retire ?

There was a Muslim area I think called Mae Sot ,the people seemed friendly

Does anyone live near these areas ?

I don't want to be around tourists so I need to keep away from the Pai area as there are bad Israelis I read

I like to retire to wet rainy hot rainforest areas where no one can bother me as I read my books and compile my statistics on life and make my lists

Mae Sot sounds like a nice place, full of Muslims and scamming bloody foreigners.

The Mae Sot border area is currently seeing foreigners fleeing from large-scale Myanmar-based online scam (call center) operations, not being scammed by the border itself; thousands were trafficked into these hubs, forced to scam others, and are now escaping crackdowns by Myanmar authorities and international pressure, crossing into Thailand seeking safety, while the original scam centers are being dismantled but continue to pop up elsewhere. Common scams in Thailand near Mae Sot still exist, like the "zig-zag" or gem scams targeting tourists, but the current major story involves victims escaping forced labor in the scam centers near the border.

I'm sure it's up that way

Not much left in Thailand and not rainforest north of chumpon, mostly jungle forests

Surat Thani and shout have some true rainforest left, where Khao Sok with the biggest protected national park.

MaeHong Son is fabulous during the summer rains and well into the winter.

But by the middle of November the forests become very dry and by mid January the PM2.5 pollution becomes a real threat to health.

For rainforests, go south, perhaps Surat Thani

Considering you're a hypochondriac, so if and when you ever retire (no free healthcare in TH), then you really need to retire at Chumphon province or below.   If you want clean air about 10 months of the year, less PM2.5 So that you won't have to worry about breathing everyday, just maybe 2 months a year.

And today is a good day at MHS, as I've been there, and you couldn't see the airport from the wat on the hill, and actually closed it, as you couldn't see the hills.  AQI of 200+

Yes I don't want to get lung cancer

I need to be in clean air

Only when it’s raining. Soon the entire region will be dry and smoke filled.

If you want to live in a rainforest with clean air then move to the top of Waialeale Kauai, after a couple months you’ll want to live in a desert.

My only negative about TH, a couple months of not so good air.   If daughter didn't live at Krung Thep, we'd live further south.

Posted this the other day, this should stress you out, and make you reconsider TH as retirement location :coffee1:

Mae Sot is in Tak, not Mae Hong Son. And the lake with paddle boats you're thinking of might be Ban Rak Thai in Mae Hong Son - not Muslims but ethnic Chinese.

…a congested tourist trap.
