Trump Vows Retaliation After U.S. Troops Killed In Syria Ambush

President Donald Trump has vowed “very serious retaliation” after two U.S. Army soldiers and a civilian American interpreter were killed in a deadly attack in Syria, marking one of the most serious losses of U.S. personnel in the region in recent months.

The Pentagon said the attack occurred on Saturday near Palmyra during a counter-ISIS operation in eastern Syria. Three additional U.S. personnel were wounded and are receiving medical treatment, officials said.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump described the incident as a direct ISIS attack on U.S. forces operating in a volatile region beyond the control of Syria’s interim government.

“This was an ISIS attack against the U.S., and Syria, in a very dangerous part of Syria,” Trump wrote. “There will be very serious retaliation.”

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said the troops were conducting a “key leader engagement” in support of ongoing counter-ISIS missions when they were ambushed. He added that the incident remains under active investigation.

U.S. Central Command later confirmed that the attack was carried out by a lone ISIS gunman, who was engaged and killed during the incident. A Pentagon official told NBC News the ambush took place in territory outside the authority of Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, underscoring the fragmented security environment in the region.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a stark warning in a separate post on X, confirming the attacker had been killed by U.S. partner forces. He offered no further operational details but delivered an uncompromising message.

“The savage who perpetrated this attack was killed by partner forces,” Hegseth wrote. “Those who target Americans will spend the rest of your brief, anxious life knowing the United States will hunt you, find you, and ruthlessly kill you.”

The deaths highlight the persistent threat posed by ISIS remnants in Syria, despite repeated claims that the group has been territorially defeated. U.S. forces continue to operate alongside local partners to disrupt insurgent networks, conduct intelligence operations, and prevent the group’s resurgence.

Trump has repeatedly argued that ISIS remains a live threat and has framed U.S. military presence in Syria as essential to preventing terror attacks against American interests. Saturday’s ambush is likely to intensify pressure on the White House to respond forcefully, potentially through targeted strikes or expanded counterterrorism operations.

As investigations continue, the administration faces renewed scrutiny over the risks to U.S. troops operating in unstable regions where control is fragmented and militant groups remain active.
