The Philippine Navy confiscated P39.8 million worth of smuggled cigarettes in three operations off the coast of Basilan and Zamboanga City. Rear Admiral Constancio Arturo Reyes Jr. of the Western Mindanao Naval Command confirmed that the largest seizure occurred on Sunday, involving a fishing vessel southeast of Tolonpisa Island, Basilan. This operation resulted in the capture of 519 master cases of cigarettes valued at P29.9 million and the detention of five crew members.

Earlier interdictions on the preceding Friday and Monday further saw P9.9 million in contraband seized from two motorboats. Authorities have handed over the confiscated cigarettes, vessels, and crew to the National Bureau of Investigation for further action. These operations underscore the navy's effort to intercept maritime smuggling and enhance security in coastal regions.

Rear Admiral Reyes emphasized the ongoing dedication to thwarting smuggling activities as a critical component of maritime security initiatives. The interdictions highlight the navy's strategic focus on high-traffic smuggling routes, leveraging intelligence, and collaboration with other agencies. Resulting arrests and confiscations demonstrate operational success and commitment to securing the nation's waters.

Going forward, the Philippine Navy plans to maintain and possibly increase maritime surveillance to curb illegal activities. Strengthening partnerships with law enforcement and regional allies is on the agenda to ensure even greater efficacy in future operations. Continued vigilance and enhanced technology will play vital roles in these efforts, reported Manila Bulletin.
