The Australian detective who brought an end to the deadly Bondi Beach terror attack has been identified as Detective Senior Constable Cesar “Cess” Barraza — a seasoned officer who once appeared on reality television and openly declared his “hatred of crime.”

Barraza is being hailed as a national hero after confronting two rifle-armed attackers during Sunday’s massacre at Bondi Beach, where Jewish families were celebrating Hanukkah. Armed with only a handgun and dressed in plain clothes, the detective took cover behind a tree and opened fire from an estimated distance of 130 feet — an extraordinary shot by police standards.

Police believe Barraza fatally wounded 50-year-old Sajid Akram and critically injured his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, effectively ending the attack. Firearms experts described the shooting as exceptional, with sources saying even elite police marksmen would struggle to hit targets accurately from that range.

Barraza, a 16-year police veteran, previously appeared on the Australian reality series The Recruits, which follows new officers entering the force. In his appearance, he spoke candidly about his motivation for joining the police, saying simply that he “hates crime.”

Investigators are continuing to examine ballistic evidence to formally confirm Barraza’s role in neutralizing the attackers. Police say the suspects carried out a targeted antisemitic attack that killed 15 people.

Naveed Akram survived the shootout and has since been charged with 59 offenses, including 15 counts of murder and one count of committing a terrorist act. Police also revealed that the suspects’ vehicle contained improvised explosive devices and homemade ISIS flags, indicating a premeditated, ideologically driven attack.

Authorities say Barraza’s actions likely prevented an even greater loss of life.

Key Takeaways

  • Detective Cesar Barraza confronted rifle-armed terrorists with only a handgun

  • Experts say his long-distance shots were “extraordinary” by police standards

  • One suspect is dead, the other faces dozens of murder and terrorism charges
