December 18, 2025Dec 18 File photo for reference only In a move to enhance the operational efficiency of Tan Son Nhat airport, the airspace restriction has been lowered from 3,000 m to 1,500 m. This trial initiative has been approved by the Ministry of National Defense and will run from December 19 to March 31, 2026, covering the peak travel season of the Lunar New Year. Previously, the 3,000 m restriction led to congestion in the Tan Son Nhat–Bien Hoa–Long Thanh airspace, notably during military operations and adverse weather conditions. By reducing the altitude limit, the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) aims to alleviate these pressures. The initiative promises to cut unnecessary detours, saving fuel and time for airlines. The VATM predicts that during peak times, this adjustment will reduce holding patterns by one to three minutes per flight. Fuel savings are substantial, with one minute of reduced flight leading to savings of VND1.6 million ($60.72) for an Airbus A321, VND3 million for an A35, and VND2.5 million for a Boeing B787. Tan Son Nhat Airport currently manages around 750 take-offs and landings daily. Looking ahead, Long Thanh International Airport is set to begin operations with three initial flights scheduled for December 19 and commercial services by mid-2026. The new altitude policy will offer greater flexibility, ensuring efficient air traffic management and minimizing conflicts. It will also facilitate improved separation of flight paths within the Tan Son Nhat–Long Thanh corridor. Previously, adverse weather often forced aircraft to circle or divert, causing significant delays. In November, for example, heavy rain resulted in several flights being redirected to Can Tho, leading to cascading disruptions across the network, reported VN Express. Key Takeaways Airspace restriction lowered to 1,500 m for improved efficiency. Expected fuel savings and reduced holding times per flight.
