An off-duty police officer in Estancia, Iloilo, has been charged with multiple offenses following a Christmas party incident on December 22. The officer, whose identity remains undisclosed, allegedly discharged his firearm and assaulted an individual. The Police Regional Office-6 confirmed that the senior master sergeant is facing charges of illegal firearm discharge and slight physical injuries.

The altercation occurred when the officer intervened in a conflict involving his friend, resulting in the beating of the victim. "There is absolutely no place in the police service for abusive behavior, especially when committed by those entrusted with authority," stated PRO-6 chief Police Brig. Gen. Josefino Ligan. Ligan emphasized that any personnel violating laws and police regulations would face criminal and administrative actions.

In addition to the primary charges, the officer also faces charges of resistance and disobedience to an agent of a person in authority. The situation has sparked reactions within the police community, highlighting concerns over behavior reflecting poorly on law enforcement, reported Manila Bulletin.
