The Bureau of Customs recently intercepted five parcels at the Central Mail Exchange Center in Pasay City, containing illegal drugs valued at approximately P21.4 million. These inbound shipments were seized on December 15 after initial screenings revealed suspicious indicators. Declared as everyday consumer items, the parcels contained illicit substances concealed within.

Upon detailed inspection, officials discovered 2,928 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride, commonly known as shabu, worth around P19,910,400, and 997 grams of high-grade marijuana, estimated at P1,495,500. The Bureau has handed over the drugs to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency for further investigation into their origins and intended destinations.

This operation highlights ongoing efforts by the Bureau of Customs to curb illegal drug trafficking and enforce stringent regulations under Republic Act No. 9165, known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, and Republic Act No. 10863, the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act. Previous incidents had flagged similar modus operandi where contraband was misdeclared as goods to bypass customs checks.

Experts indicate that the seizure is a significant blow against drug syndicates attempting to exploit mail services for distribution. It raises concerns about the security measures in place for parcel shipments, prompting authorities to enhance screening techniques and collaborate with international partners to identify and halt similar methods.

Looking forward, the Bureau of Customs plans to intensify its efforts in screening inbound mail and parcels. They aim to employ advanced technologies for better detection and pursue collaborative measures with local and international agencies. Investigations are underway to trace the network and connections of both senders and intended recipients involved in this case, reported PhilStar.
