Over the holiday period from December 21 to December 26, 263 road crashes occurred across the Philippines, according to the Department of Health (DOH). The data reveals that 224 incidents involved individuals not wearing safety accessories like helmets and seatbelts, with 31 accidents involving alcohol impairment. Tragically, two fatalities were reported, both from motorcycle accidents.

The DOH noted that 193 of these incidents were motorcycle-related. Despite the high number, this represents a 7% decrease compared to the same timeframe in 2024. In response, the agency reiterated safety reminders for drivers and passengers, emphasizing the use of DTI-approved helmets for motorcyclists and seatbelts for those in four-wheeled vehicles.

Driver awareness campaigns highlight the importance of avoiding driving while tired or under the influence of alcohol. Additionally, adherence to speed limits and road signs, as well as avoiding cell phone usage while driving, are part of the recommended practices. Ensuring adequate sleep before travel—seven to eight hours—is also stressed to reduce accidents.

Looking forward, authorities aim to continue promoting road safety enhancements and education. These efforts include reinforcing awareness programs and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to further reduce road-related incidents. The ongoing initiatives are part of a broader strategy to improve overall traffic safety in the country, reported Balita.
