The temperature in La Trinidad, Benguet, dropped to a record-breaking low of 9.6°C on Tuesday, December 30, marking the coldest day of the 2025-2026 Amihan season. According to the PAGASA BSU Agromet Station, this temperature is the lowest recorded in the region during the current northeast monsoon season. Baguio City followed with a low of 14.2°C, while other areas such as Casiguran, Aurora, and Laoag City, Ilocos Norte recorded temperatures of 19.0°C and 20.2°C, respectively.

The chilly weather is attributed to the ongoing Amihan, or northeast monsoon, affecting the northern regions of the Philippines. PAGASA had previously warned of dropping temperatures, predicting they could fall further to 7.9°C in the coming weeks. This phenomenon has led to unusual conditions, including frost formation on plants and flowers in Paoay, Atok, as shared by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Benguet on social media.

Experts are advising locals and travelers in the region to prepare for the cold spell, as temperatures may drop even further. The cold snap is expected to impact agriculture and may lead to increased heating costs for residents. Authorities urge caution and preparedness during this cold period.

Moving forward, PAGASA continues to monitor weather patterns closely. Residents in northern Luzon are advised to keep updated with weather forecasts, as more cold spells are anticipated. The region is advised to brace for potential disruptions in daily activities due to the low temperatures, reported Balita.
