Russia-Ukraine Peace Deal Hangs by a Thread Over Key Issues

A potential end to the long-standing conflict between Russia and Ukraine seems within reach, but "thorny, tough issues" remain, according to US President Donald Trump. Two main sticking points are territory disputes and the control of Europe's largest nuclear plant, currently held by Russia. As talks near a final stage, the pressure is on for a diplomatic breakthrough, with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky set to meet European leaders in France on 6 January.

The territorial dispute primarily involves Ukraine's industrial Donbas region, which Vladimir Putin is keen to claim entirely. Russian forces control most of Luhansk but only 75% of Donetsk, and Putin demands complete authority, including important cities. Zelensky proposed a solution involving a demilitarised zone, but Putin's approval is unlikely, as Russian generals report rapid territorial gains.

A significant hurdle involves the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, held by Russia since 2022. Although the US has suggested joint management with Ukraine, Kyiv finds it unacceptable. Trust is minimal between the nations, complicating any potential agreement regarding the plant. Other issues include security guarantees for Ukraine, economic losses, and NATO membership, with varying levels of resistance from Russia.

Despite challenges, Kyiv demands security assurances similar to NATO's response mechanism and financial support for rebuilding, estimated at $800bn (27,200 billion Thai baht). While talks of a joint investment fund exist, Russia's involvement is questionable given frozen assets in Europe.

Ukraine's EU membership and NATO aspirations exacerbate the complexities of the negotiations.

Looking ahead, significant doubts remain over a feasible compromise without a substantial increase in trust. With 87% of Ukrainians desiring peace but rejecting concessions on Donbas, Zelensky proposes a referendum needing a 60-day ceasefire, though the Kremlin argues it might worsen tensions. The outcome of these negotiations could shape future regional stability, reported the BBC.

Key Takeaways

  • Russia and Ukraine are close to a peace agreement, but major disputes persist.

  • Territorial control and nuclear plant management are key issues to resolve.

  • A Ukrainian referendum could determine public support for the peace plan.
