The Department of Health (DOH) in the Philippines has reported 140 cases of fireworks-related injuries (FWRI) from December 21 to December 30, marking a 23% decrease from the previous year. Most victims are boys aged five to 14, with Metro Manila recording the highest number of cases. The DOH highlighted that injuries stemmed mainly from fireworks like five-star, boga, kwitis, and illegal pyrotechnics.

Last year's incidents totaled 182 over the same period. The DOH emphasizes that even minor wounds from fireworks are prone to tetanus, urging parents to seek booster shots for their children. Health Secretary Ted Herbosa promotes community fireworks displays as a safer alternative for celebrating.

Authorities have been proactive in controlling illegal fireworks. In Laguna, officials destroyed illegal firecrackers worth 4.8 million pesos. Calabarzon police conducted operations leading to 12 arrests and confiscation of dangerous items. The police also destroyed fireworks such as "goodbye Philippines" and "lolo thunder" in Bulacan.

Elsewhere, Negros Island recorded 37 FWRI cases, primarily from items like "triangle" and "boga." Officials, including Malabon Mayor Jeannie Sandoval, are advising residents to enjoy public fireworks displays and use musical instruments like torotot instead of firecrackers.

Acting PNP Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered thorough sweeps for illegal firecrackers in hotspots like Divisoria, Manila, and intensified efforts to monitor online sales. He emphasized a strict one-strike policy against police officers firing their guns during celebrations.

Looking forward, authorities will maintain vigilant oversight during New Year celebrations to ensure safety, while the DOH continues advocating for safer practices. Community education and enforcement will play key roles in reducing fireworks-related injuries further, reported PhilStar.
