Starting January 2, 2026, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) has implemented a ban on e-trikes from major Metro Manila roads, including EDSA, C-5 Road, Roxas Boulevard, and Quirino Avenue to Magallanes - South Luzon Expressway (SLEX). This decision aligns with existing guidelines from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) aimed at enhancing road safety. LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Markus V. Lacanilao emphasized that these highways are designed for larger and faster vehicles.

Citing safety concerns, Lacanilao noted that mixing slower and lighter vehicles like e-trikes with high-speed traffic poses risks to all road users. The LTO seeks understanding from the public as it plans to develop safer routes for e-trike operators. Collaboration with local governments and industry sectors is underway to establish these routes.

The LTO warned that violations could lead to penalties under Republic Act No. 4136 and Joint Administrative Order No. 2014-01, including fines and potential impoundment of e-trikes. Traffic enforcers will patrol critical points to ensure compliance.

With the new restrictions, discussions on how to accommodate e-trikes within urban transport frameworks are expected to continue, focusing on integrating them into the transit ecosystem without compromising safety, reported Balita.
