A set of unidentified human remains was discovered washed ashore at Pa Son beach in Surat Thani province, prompting an urgent police investigation to identify the deceased. The remains, reduced largely to a skeleton, were found on Friday afternoon, shocking local residents and raising questions about how long the person had been at sea. Police secured the area and begun forensic procedures to establish the identity and cause of death.

The discovery was reported at 4.15pm on 2 January 2026, when Pol Lt Col Somsak Phonladej, an investigator at Chaiya Police Station, received a notification of a body washed up along the shoreline. The location was identified as Pa Son beach, Moo 5, Phum Riang sub-district, Chaiya district, Surat Thani. Officers informed senior commanders before travelling to the scene with an investigation team and local rescue workers.

At the scene, police found the body of an unidentified male of unknown nationality and age lying face down near the waterline. The head consisted only of a skull, while the lower body, including the legs, was reduced mostly to bones, with some decomposed skin. The remains were wearing a blue round-neck sports shirt and brown underwear.

Officers also found a necklace with two Buddhist amulets still on the body, which was collected and preserved as evidence. The condition of the remains led investigators to believe the man had been dead for a considerable period before being washed ashore. No personal identification documents were found at the scene.

Police stated that the body was transferred to hospital for a full forensic examination. The examination is expected to help determine the cause of death and provide additional clues regarding the length of time the remains were in the water. Authorities are coordinating with relevant agencies to compare the findings against missing persons reports from surrounding areas.

Amarin reported that investigators are also checking whether any missing person cases have been reported locally or in nearby provinces that could match the description. Police said the process may take time due to the advanced state of decomposition. Further updates will be released once forensic results and identification efforts progress.
