Police in Phichit province have filed three serious charges against a 37-year-old man accused of deliberately starting a fire that spread through a municipal market, destroying 10 shop units and causing damage estimated at more than 50 million baht. The blaze originated in a residential building and quickly engulfed neighbouring structures, leaving multiple traders and families facing total losses. Authorities confirmed the incident has had a severe economic impact on the local community.

The fire occurred at the Khao Sai Municipal Market in Thap Khlo district, Phichit province, with the latest official update provided on 5 January 2026 at 10:35am. Police identified the source of the fire as the home of Ms Wanna, also known as “Pa Ruay”, who operated a gas shop at the location. The suspect, Mr Yutthana, aged 37, is her son and was arrested shortly after the incident.

Pol Col Pheemapol Muangsi, Superintendent of Thap Khlo Police Station, said investigators believe the incident was triggered by a domestic dispute. According to police questioning, the suspect argued with his mother after she refused to give him money, went to his bedroom, and deliberately set it alight. The flames spread rapidly to the adjoining market area, destroying 10 shop units.

Police have charged Mr Yutthana with three offences. These include arson causing damage to others’ property, an offence carrying a maximum penalty of death under Thai law, illegal possession of a 9mm automatic handgun and ammunition, and use of a Category 1 narcotic, identified as methamphetamine. Officers noted that during questioning the suspect spoke incoherently and appeared confused.

Authorities said the estimated damage from the fire is around 50 million baht. Pol Col Pheemapol expressed sympathy for the affected traders, noting that many were not involved in the dispute but lost their livelihoods entirely. Police are now coordinating with provincial officials to arrange assistance for those impacted.

Phichit Governor Thaniya Naipinit said provincial authorities have mobilised all relevant agencies to support residents affected by the fire at Khao Sai Market. Emergency relief, including water supplies, has been dispatched, and officials are preparing financial compensation in line with Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation criteria. She confirmed the province would provide full support to eligible victims.

Khoasod reported that investigations into the case are continuing, with police preparing the suspect for further legal proceedings. Officials are also assessing the full extent of the damage to ensure appropriate compensation and recovery measures are put in place for affected households and traders.
