Mayon Volcano Alert Prompts Urgent Evacuations

Residents near Mayon Volcano in Albay have been advised to evacuate as authorities raised the alert status to Level 3, signaling increased volcanic activity. The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has instructed local government units (LGUs) to enforce evacuation within the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) to protect lives from potential lava flows and rockfalls. Areas within seven to eight kilometers are also advised to prepare for possible evacuation.

The order follows ongoing signs of unrest from the volcano, including a continuous collapse of the summit lava dome beginning January 1. LGUs have been told to heighten monitoring through local Disaster Risk Reduction Management councils. The DILG emphasized the importance of vigilance against pyroclastic density currents, lahar flows, and sediment-laden streamflows, especially during heavy rainfall.

Experts caution that the situation remains dynamic, and communities must adhere strictly to safety protocols. The DILG has directed LGUs to activate Emergency Operation Centers (EOCs) around the clock and collaborate with provincial and regional authorities to ensure coordinated responses. These measures form part of the Operation L!STO Protocols for Volcanic Eruption-Mayon Volcano.

Looking forward, authorities will continue to monitor Mayon's activities closely. Residents in the affected zones must stay informed and follow evacuation orders to ensure safety. The DILG will provide updates as the situation evolves, urging cooperation between local governments and communities to mitigate risks effectively, reported Manila Bulletin.
