Tourists visiting a mangrove eco-tourism site in Trang on January 7 enjoyed a vibrant natural display as swarms of colorful fiddler crabs emerged from the mudflats. The crabs were observed at Ban Rai Yong Star in Palian district, captivating visitors with their vivid movements and interactions in the muddy landscape adjacent to the mangroves. Observers noted the unique coloring of the crabs, with some displaying a mix of yellow claws and blue or black-and-white bodies.

The eco-tourism site, managed by Aphinan Phetpheng, offers year-round sightings of these crabs, who feed on decaying plant matter and tiny organisms in the silt. Male fiddler crabs are distinguished by their singular oversized claw, while females have two equal-sized claws. Their vibrant colors, which become more pronounced with maturity, are thought to help attract mates. Known as natural tide predictors, these crabs instinctively seal their burrows before high tide, making them less visible during peak tides.

The presence of the crabs is seen as a positive indicator of the health of the mangrove ecosystem. The flourishing crab population supports local fish, shrimp, and shellfish populations, playing a significant role in the food chain. Although not typically harvested for food due to their small size, they are often collected for aquariums and their presence indicates a thriving coastal environment.

Aphinan noted the unusually large number of crabs at the site, highlighting at least seven distinct colors. This abundance is viewed positively for the ecosystem's health and provides an engaging attraction for eco-tourists. As visitors continue to flock to the site, the interplay between the crabs and their environment becomes an educational and captivating spectacle, reported The Thaiger.
