Trump Cancels 'Second Wave' Venezuela Attacks Amid Cooperation

US President Donald Trump announced he has cancelled a planned “second wave” of military attacks on Venezuela due to the country’s cooperation with the United States. This comes after a military operation last week aimed at ousting Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who is now in US custody with his wife, Cilia Flores. Trump's decision follows improved relations, particularly in rebuilding Venezuela’s oil and gas infrastructure.

The initial military action saw calls from the US for Venezuela’s interim government to release political prisoners, which began on Thursday. High-profile prisoners, including opposition politicians, were freed as a gesture of “Seeking Peace,” according to Venezuela’s acting government. Trump had previously declared the possibility of launching a second, larger attack if necessary, but the cooperation between the US and Venezuela rendered it unnecessary.

In a Truth Social post, Trump noted that Venezuela was making “smart gestures” to build peace and security in the region. However, he also mentioned that US forces would remain in place to maintain safety and security. This week, the Senate moved to limit future US military force in Venezuela without Congress approval, reflecting legislative pushback against Trump's actions.

Looking forward, Trump's administration plans to target land-based cartels, expanding operations beyond previous Caribbean and Eastern Pacific engagements. Trump is also meeting oil executives and promoting investment in Venezuela’s oil sector, despite scepticism from the industry. Trump claimed that “at least 100 billion dollars” (3,600 billion Thai baht) could be invested, though the logistics remain undetermined, reported CNN.

Key Takeaways:

  • Trump cancelled further attacks on Venezuela due to increased cooperation.

  • Venezuela began releasing political prisoners as part of peace efforts.

  • The Senate aims to limit the use of force by the United States in Venezuela.
