The National Health Security Office (NHSO) in Thailand is set to introduce facial scan verification starting Monday. This new measure is part of an upgrade to the Universal Health Coverage scheme, aiming to crack down on fraudulent activities within the health fund system. Deputy government spokeswoman Aiyarin Phanrit announced this initiative, highlighting its implementation in various healthcare settings, including medical and dental clinics, pharmacies, physiotherapy clinics, and Thai traditional medicine clinics.

The facial recognition technology is designed not only to improve service efficiency but also to safeguard the proper use of healthcare entitlements. With about 15,000 pharmacies and private clinics registered under the scheme, the NHSO reports that 3,551 facilities have already updated their systems. These include 2,120 pharmacies, 887 dental clinics, 381 medical clinics, and 163 physiotherapy clinics. Facilities failing to update their information will be unable to offer services under the new system.

According to NHSO secretary-general Dr Jadej Thammatacharee, the facial scan verification is mandatory and crucial for linking client identification to reimbursements. He stressed, "If identity verification through facial scanning is not completed, the system cannot process payment," underscoring the measure's importance in protecting public funds from misuse. The system, integrated with the Interior Ministry’s digital identity database, employs a secure Face Verification Service to ensure high reliability and data protection.

Patients can access healthcare services by walking in or booking in advance using the NHSO's official Line account. Those who schedule beforehand will receive a QR code valid for six hours, which must be verified upon arrival at the facility, reported the Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways:

  • Thailand’s NHSO will roll out facial scan verification on Monday.

  • The measure targets fraud prevention within the Universal Health Coverage scheme.

  • Facilities must update their systems or face suspension from service provision.
