The Department of Health (DOH) reported an increase in cases of the super flu, specifically the influenza A(H3N2) subclade K, across the country. As of December 2025, 77 cases of this variant were identified out of 326 sequenced influenza A cases from January to November. Despite the rise, health officials emphasized there is no cause for alarm as most patients have recovered without fatalities.

Super flu cases were predominantly recorded in the National Capital Region with 23 cases and in Calabarzon and the Cordillera Administrative Region, each with 16 cases. The DOH highlighted that this variant, though more aggressive due to mutations, continues to present symptoms similar to the seasonal flu, such as cough, colds, fever, and body aches. Health experts caution that these mutations can potentially lead to severe complications affecting the heart and brain.

The World Health Organization (WHO) in its Risk Assessment as of December 10, 2025, noted that current data do not indicate an increase in disease severity for subclade K cases. Vaccination remains a key measure, with existing vaccines proving effective against severe outcomes and hospitalizations. Infectious disease expert Rontgene Solante urged the public, especially vulnerable populations, to get vaccinated with updated flu vaccines available by February or March.

Looking forward, authorities recommend continued vigilance and protective measures. Solante advised wearing masks in high-risk areas and stressed that once the updated vaccine is released, priority should be given to the elderly and individuals with pre-existing conditions. The DOH will continue monitoring the situation and disseminate updates as new information becomes available, reported Philstar.

Key Takeaways

  • DOH reports 77 cases of super flu with no deaths.

  • WHO states no increased severity in subclade K cases.

  • Updated flu vaccine available by early 2026 to bolster protection.
