The Philippine National Police (PNP) has announced a temporary suspension of firearms permits in Central Visayas from January 15 to January 31, 2026, in preparation for hosting the ASEAN Summit and related meetings. The suspension starts at 12:01 AM on January 15 and ends at 11:59 PM on January 31. This measure aims to enhance public safety and security during the summit, which will be attended by international delegates.

Leading up to the 2026 ASEAN Summit, various firearms-related permits will be suspended. These include permits for transporting firearms for gun club members, gun manufacturers, dealers, and gunsmiths. Additionally, permits to carry firearms outside of residence (PTCFOR), transport and purchase explosives, and licenses related to firecrackers and pyrotechnics will also be temporarily halted.

The PNP, AFP, and other law enforcement agencies are exempt from this suspension when on official duty for the summit. This directive is part of the broader security measures to ensure a safe environment for the attendees and participants. The summit, hosted in Cebu City, will include key events such as the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF 2026) from January 27 to January 30, held at the Mactan Expo Center in Lapu-Lapu City.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) notes that the ASEAN Tourism Forum is expected to draw participation from ASEAN Tourism Ministers, National Tourism Organizations, senior officials, exhibitors, and media personnel. This gathering underscores the significance of the summit beyond political discussions, promoting collaboration in tourism and related industries.

Given these preparations, local authorities and community members are advised to comply with the restrictions to facilitate smooth proceedings of the events. While security measures will be stringent, normal activities will continue under the guidance of local law enforcement, ensuring minimal disruption.

Looking ahead, successful execution of the summit, including the implementation of security measures, will reflect positively on the Philippines' capability to host large international events. Organizers and authorities remain vigilant, coordinating various aspects to deliver a secure and efficient summit experience for all attendees, reported Balita.
