The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has issued a warning to the public regarding online love scams exploiting the agency's name to extort money from individuals. This alert was shared by the BI on January 13, after a woman approached their office to verify an email supposedly from an immigration official. The email falsely claimed that the BI intercepted a parcel from her overseas partner, requiring a payment for its release.

The BI clarified that the email was part of a fraudulent romance scam. They emphasized that the agency does not intercept parcels, facilitate deliveries, or collect fees for package releases, nor does it operate under any "Ministry of Interior." These scammers misuse the BI's name and create fake processes to deceive victims, the agency explained.

The public is urged to remain vigilant against such scams and report any suspicious messages to authorities. The BI has referred the incident to the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Cybercrime Division for further investigation. This scam highlights the ongoing threat of cybercrime exploiting governmental agency names.

The BI continues to remind citizens that their mandate is limited to immigration control and border management, not parcel handling or clearance. Individuals are encouraged to verify communications and be cautious of unsolicited messages that demand payments. Investigations by the CICC and NBI are expected to delve deeper into the scam's origins and methods, reported Balita.

Key Takeaways

  • The BI warns of scams using its name to extort money.
