The Royal Thai Police announced a significant corruption investigation concerning the illegal release of Chinese detainees, revealed during a press conference on January 16. Deputy Inspector General Pol Lt Gen Trairong Phiwphan, alongside senior officials, disclosed the involvement of several officers in systemic misconduct. The inquiry began after the Chinese Embassy raised concerns about Ma Guangxu, a Chinese national who vanished from an immigration detention center under dubious circumstances.

The investigation stems from an inquiry initiated in January 2025 regarding Ma Guangxu, also known as Ah Hang. Ma was a suspect wanted by Chinese authorities and disappeared after being removed from custody for purported legal proceedings in Thailand. Although he completed his sentence, Ma was not deported as required, prompting Chinese authorities to question his whereabouts.

In response, Pol Gen Kitrat Phanphet ordered an internal probe, uncovering misconduct spanning 2021-2025. Officers allegedly manipulated legal processes, filing fraudulent charges to remove detainees from immigration detention. The scheme involved 131 detainees and implicated five officers from the Metropolitan Police Bureau. One officer, Pol Capt Chaiya, has been dismissed, while others face disciplinary and criminal proceedings, with cases referred to the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

To prevent future incidents, Kitrat enacted reforms, initiating a comprehensive audit of immigration releases over the last decade. The reforms focus on investigating corruption, auditing detention records, verifying detainee statuses, regulating procedures for foreign suspects, and updating the CRIMES database. These measures aim to close loopholes that allowed for such misconduct.

Looking ahead, the Royal Thai Police are thoroughly examining every step of the detainee release process. Trairong emphasized the commitment to uncover how these breaches occurred and stressed the importance of ensuring fairness during the investigation. He noted that if fraudulent practices are confirmed, they will be treated as intentional fabrications designed to help suspects evade deportation, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Thai Police are probing officers for alleged detainee release misconduct.

  • Officers fraudulently removed 131 detainees from immigration custody.

  • Nationwide immigration audits and reforms are being implemented to prevent recurrence.

Every level of government, and all government departments are rotten to the core here.

However, I would like to remind members that it's still perfectly safe to "invest" in Thailand. 🤣

Lock up those officials for duration of what should have been the Chinese criminals sentences.
