Commuters using the EDSA busway in Metro Manila can now enjoy free internet access at 17 stations, thanks to the recent installation of WiFi by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT). The initiative, part of the Free Public Internet Access Program, aims to benefit nearly 67 million commuters by delivering download speeds of up to 60 Mbps during non-peak hours.

This development aligns with the Department of Transportation's (DOTr) push for contactless transactions across public transport systems in the region. The DICT collaborated with the DOTr to equip each station with a 5G device, enabling commuters to perform basic online tasks and enjoy light-data entertainment while waiting for buses.

Information Secretary Henry Aguda highlighted that while download speeds can reach 60 Mbps, they may drop to 10 Mbps during peak times due to increased passenger use. The stations equipped with this service include key areas such as Balintawak, SM North Edsa, and Ayala, among others.

Future expansions will see the installation of free WiFi services at additional stations, including Monumento and Guadalupe, pending the completion of EDSA's rehabilitation efforts. This initiative reflects a broader strategy to enhance public transport infrastructure and improve commuter experiences in Metro Manila, reported Philstar.

Key Takeaways

  • Free WiFi is available at 17 EDSA busway stations, benefiting millions.

  • Speeds up to 60 Mbps; may reduce to 10 Mbps during peak times.

  • Future expansions planned post-EDSA rehabilitation.
