Air India Jet Engine Sucks in Cargo Container at Delhi

India's aviation authority has launched a probe after an Air India plane’s engine ingested a cargo container at Delhi airport. The aircraft, an Airbus A350 bound for New York, sustained engine damage, but no injuries occurred. The incident forced the plane to be grounded for repairs.

On Thursday, the plane returned to Delhi shortly after take-off when Iran temporarily closed its airspace, affecting flight routes. After a safe landing, the aircraft was taxiing to the parking area when poor visibility contributed to the incident. The aircraft's right engine ingested the cargo container that had come off a ground vehicle and left it on the taxiway.

Around 240 passengers were onboard during the mishap, with crew numbers ranging between six to eight. The event took place early Thursday morning at around 05:25 local time. The cargo container fell after a cartwheel came off and was left behind while the vehicle moved the remaining cargo.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) cleared the metal debris and has initiated a detailed investigation. Images shared on X reveal the damage to both engine casing and fan blades, highlighting issues on the taxiway. This event adds pressure on Indian airports, which are scrutinised for ground safety lapses following prior safety concerns reported by the DGCA.

Air India, operating six A350 aircraft on routes such as London and New York, could potentially experience service disruptions. While they haven’t announced specific affected routes, the grounding of this plane may impact certain A350 services, reported the BBC.

Key Takeaways:

  • Air India's A350 engine ingested a cargo container, causing damage.

  • Dense fog and poor visibility contributed to the incident at Delhi airport.

  • DGCA has launched an investigation, while Air India warns of possible route disruptions.

I guess there are, but I also think they're not always followed.
