The European Union (EU), in collaboration with the National Parks and Development Committee (NPDC), is backing the restoration of bicycle racks in Intramuros, Manila. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable urban mobility in the Philippines. The relaunch event, held at Rizal Park, saw participation from numerous cyclists dedicated to advancing sustainable urban development and climate action.

Previously, Intramuros and other areas faced challenges regarding sustainable transportation infrastructure. The EU delegation has prioritized rehabilitating these bike racks to encourage cycling as a feasible transportation alternative. EU Ambassador Massimo Santoro emphasized that bike racks symbolize efforts to reduce traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions, and improve air quality, which contribute to a healthier urban environment.

The initiative is backed by several cycling organizations, including Kalyetista, Cycad, Cyclebros, Firefly Brigade, Tiklop Society of the Philippines, Pinas Lowridaz BC, and Make it Safer Movement. The groups support the EU's vision of cycling as accessible and integral to urban transport solutions. NPDC’s Jezreel Gaius Apelar highlighted the project as a testament to the shared commitment between the Philippines and the EU towards active mobility and sustainability.

Ambassador Santoro stressed the EU's climate objectives, which involve reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and achieving climate neutrality by 2050. He noted that tackling climate change necessitates global collaboration and recognized cycling as an affordable and effective solution. Cycling advocates also see the refurbished facilities as a step towards inclusivity in public spaces.

Looking ahead, the project aims to further enhance Manila’s cycling infrastructure, providing residents and tourists with better mobility options. Continued collaboration between international and local entities will be key to achieving long-term sustainability goals. With this initiative, Manila hopes to set an example for climate-resilient urban development, reported Philstar.
