Thai activist Ruangkrai Leekitwattana has requested the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) investigate a campaign policy by Mongkolkit Suksintharanon, which suggests allowing women to have up to four husbands. Leekitwattana, a Palang Pracharath Party candidate, sent a formal letter to the ECT raising concerns over the policy's legitimacy. This proposal, shared by Mongkolkit on social media, has sparked significant online debate and confusion regarding its seriousness.

Mongkolkit, third on the New Alternative Party's list and second for the party’s prime ministerial candidate, faced criticism after his January 13 Facebook post. His suggestion, likened to an interpretation of Islamic law, claimed gender equality as its basis. Critics, including Ruangkrai, argue this contradicts established norms where Islamic law permits men but not women to have multiple spouses.

In response to public queries on his seriousness, Mongkolkit affirmed his commitment to the proposal, stirring further controversy. Ruangkrai insists that Mongkolkit’s position misleads voters and could constitute a violation under Section 73(5) of the Organic Act. This section prohibits deceptive practices that could influence election outcomes, a point reinforced by past ECT rulings mentioned by Ruangkrai.

The implications of Mongkolkit's policy have drawn expert and public scrutiny, raising questions of its feasibility and impact on societal norms. The debate touches on broader themes of gender equality and political ethics in Thailand. Mongkolkit's additional suggestion of obtaining nuclear warheads for national security has further complicated his political stance, sparking additional debate.

Moving forward, the ECT will review the proposal's compliance with election laws. Their decision could impact Mongkolkit’s candidacy and the New Alternative Party's campaign strategies. Observers are keenly watching the ECT’s ruling to understand its implications for future political discourse in Thailand, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Thai Election Commission to investigate Mongkolkit’s multi-husband proposal.

  • Critics argue the policy contradicts traditional and legal norms in Thailand.

  • The outcome may influence Mongkolkit's and the New Alternative Party's election strategies.

Can't we get rid of this man?? He has on everything a comment and want to investigate everything. Even this nonsense of a woman who can 4 husbands... It has nothing to do with any law,as it is not possible to legal 2 or more times.. Buddhistic marriages for the family ok, but that is not legal and only a deal for persons themselves...Nothing to do with politics
