A brief physical altercation between a Taiwanese tourist and a group of Thai visitors broke out at Wat Rong Khun, widely known as the White Temple, in Chiang Rai, before being peacefully resolved at a local police station. The incident, which occurred on the temple’s narrow “Bridge of Rebirth”, caused momentary disruption among surrounding visitors but resulted in no serious injuries. Both sides later agreed to compensation and paid fines, bringing the matter to an amicable close.

The confrontation took place in the afternoon of 15 January 2026, though footage of the incident began circulating online only recently, drawing public attention. A 12-second video shared on social media and messaging groups showed a man and a woman engaged in a physical dispute as other tourists looked on in shock. The location was identified as the bridge leading to the white ordination hall, one of the temple’s most recognisable and symbolic features.

According to checks by reporters, the dispute stemmed from a misunderstanding over rules prohibiting visitors from stopping to take photographs on the bridge. The area is clearly designated as a no-stopping zone to prevent congestion and ensure safety due to its narrow and elevated design. Language barriers and differing expectations among visitors escalated a verbal disagreement into physical contact.

Mr Narongchai Thepthon, aged 54, owner of the Sala Luang Pho To shop opposite Wat Rong Khun, described the incident as highly inappropriate. He noted that the temple is considered a place of sanctuary and calm, adding that hot weather and the symbolic depiction of hell beneath the bridge could contribute to heightened emotions. He stressed that as hosts, Thai people should remain calm and welcoming, warning that negative publicity could harm Thailand’s tourism image.

Temple security staff intervened promptly and escorted both parties to Mueang Chiang Rai Police Station for legal proceedings. Police later confirmed that after mediation, both sides acknowledged the conflict was caused by misunderstanding rather than intent to cause serious harm. The case concluded with mutual apologies, compensation for damages and the payment of fines, after which all parties were released.

ThaiRath reported that Mr Narongchai added that the Bridge of Rebirth is a specially controlled area with multilingual warning signs clearly stating that stopping for photographs is prohibited. Temple officials confirmed the incident was an isolated case and did not affect normal operations or the overall atmosphere. Visitors have been urged to follow posted regulations strictly to maintain safety and order.

Remove this temple from the attraction list.. Double standard pricing, and now even can't stop to make a pic, and Thai people without any shortcoming will correct you if you do... Not a tourist destination.. let it to the netizens

Seems like every little spat gets attention though not a whole lot of exciting interactions here in the north, at least not until within the first ring road in cm.
