Thailand's Public Health Ministry has announced new efforts to tackle increasing obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the country. At the "KIN-D: Key Integration for Nutrition and Defeat NCDs" event, Health Minister Phatthanathorn Promphan emphasized the critical need for early intervention through nutritional education and easier access to healthier foods. This move targets chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular conditions driven by poor diets and low physical activity levels.

Over the past 20 years, obesity rates, particularly among children, have soared, doubling the prevalence of NCDs in Thailand. The ministry is actively working to reverse this trend, pivoting towards prevention rather than treatment. The KIN-D initiative serves as a collaborative platform, uniting various societal sectors to develop sustainable strategies for reducing NCDs' impact.

International nutrition expert, Professor Walter C. Willett from Harvard University, provided insights during the event on diets that promote health and prevent NCDs. Professor Willett showcased evidence linking specific dietary patterns to disease prevention and offered suggestions for adapting these strategies to Thailand's unique needs.

Dr. Somrerk Jeamsamran, the Public Health Ministry's Permanent Secretary, underscored the campaign's focus on enhancing nutritional literacy and creating environments that facilitate health. Director-General Dr. Amporn Benjaphonpiphat highlighted alarming childhood obesity trends, attributing them to high consumption of unhealthy processed foods. The Department of Health intends to reform the nutritional landscape through improved systems, clear communication, and environments that encourage healthier choices.

A discussion panel featuring experts from agriculture to the private sector explored how to foster healthy food production and enforce robust food safety standards. Collaborations with organizations like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Thai Retailers Association are underway to drive changes in retail environments that promote health-oriented food selections.

The KIN-D platform not merely aims for academic engagement but seeks active sector-wide integration. By partnering with stakeholders across various industries, the Public Health Ministry is laying the groundwork for a sustainable health future in Thailand, reported Khaosod.
