Thailand has moved forward with its bid to secure UNESCO recognition for Chud Thai, the national costume, as part of a wider effort to safeguard and promote the country’s cultural heritage. The initiative is intended to strengthen Thailand’s soft power while raising international awareness of traditional Thai craftsmanship.

On 26 January 2026, Culture Minister Sabida Thaised attended a working lunch hosted by Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok. The meeting focused on cooperation between agencies to support Thailand’s nomination and to plan international promotion of Chud Thai.

The proposal seeks UNESCO recognition under the title “Chud Thai: The Knowledge, Craftsmanship and Practices of the Thai National Costume”. It also includes plans to promote Chud Thai Phra Ratchaniyom to international audiences as a distinctive representation of Thai culture.

The bid follows preparations that have been under way for several years. In July last year, Culture Ministry permanent secretary Prasop Riangngern said UNESCO had confirmed the nomination would be examined at the 21st session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2026.

Thailand has pursued policies to preserve and promote intangible cultural heritage since 2009. At present, the country has 396 items registered as national intangible cultural heritage, reflecting a broad range of traditions, practices and knowledge.

Chud Thai Phra Ratchaniyom was listed at the national level in 2023. The cabinet subsequently approved its submission to UNESCO on 26 March 2024, clearing the way for the current international nomination process.

Prasop Riangngern said Chud Thai reflects Thailand’s cultural identity and refined craftsmanship. He noted that it draws on traditional techniques, patterns and locally woven fabrics from across the country, highlighting regional diversity within a unified national style.

He also highlighted the origins of Chud Thai Phra Ratchaniyom, which was researched and designed by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother. The designs were developed during official overseas visits in 1960 to present a distinctly Thai image to the international community.

Today, Chud Thai Phra Ratchaniyom is widely worn at royal ceremonies, official functions and weddings. It is seen as symbolising the value of Thai wisdom while continuing to inspire contemporary Thai fashion design.

Khoasod reported that if successful, the UNESCO listing would add international recognition to an already established national heritage item. The nomination will be considered during UNESCO’s 2026 committee session, with Thai authorities continuing coordination and promotional efforts in the lead-up.

Most Thais are proud - and rightly so - of their cultural heritage.

However, much of it originally came from outside the country.

Classical dance from the Khmers.

Musical instruments from Java.

Many of their most popular foods from the Malay states, etc., etc.

That said, they have created a unique culture out of it all where I have spent my adult life as a graphic artist greatly inspired by it.

I also raised a family along the way... I wouldn't have wanted to do it anywhere else.
