Thailand's Anti-Fake News Centre (AFNC) processed 4,528 messages for verification, as part of 159,929 monitored messages, according to Wetang Phuangsup, spokesperson for the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) on January 26. The messages primarily originated from social media channels, with Social Listening identifying 4,521, and the LINE Official channel contributing 7. Out of these, 33 issues were flagged for detailed verification, with results already provided for 10.

The AFNC's latest report highlighted seven key topics, including three verified as true, three as fake, and one as misleading. The fake claims included false benefits for foreigners under the "Let’s Go Halves Plus" scheme, which the Ministry of Finance confirmed as fake. This scheme requires participants to be Thai nationals with specific eligibility criteria involving Thai national ID and age.

The true items focused on health warnings, such as tongue color indicating illness and the severity of the Nipah virus, which lacks a vaccine and can spread rapidly. Misleading information suggested a total traffic closure on the Rama II expressway when no such order existed. Fake news also mentioned an unauthorized Facebook recruitment for fruit pickers in Australia and a fraudulent SEC contact channel on LINE.

Looking forward, the DES Ministry, in collaboration with Krungthai Bank, ensures strict identity verification measures for participation in government schemes, like "Let’s Go Halves Plus." This is to prevent misuse and fraudulent claims, underpinning the importance of public awareness in combating misinformation, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • AFNC detected and managed 4,528 of 159,929 messages for potential fake news.

  • Verification confirmed fake claims about foreigner benefits under a Thai scheme.

  • Thailand stresses public vigilance against misinformation through credible channels.

Foreigners don't even get half of the companies they set up, pay for and bring expertise to run (except in vary rare circumstances) has to be 51 % Thai owned 🥴

There is also the 51% rule for ownership of units in condominium projects and 0% ownership of land.
